HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Heritage Centre contains books, documents, maps, memorabilia, audio recordings, scrap books, newspapers, CDs & DVDs,  and a computerised and indexed archive of over 15,000 photographs of Wigston and surrounding areas.

The Centre also has computers with internet access and a wealth of records for genealogical research for Wigston, as well as further afield.

The Centre is open for free viewing of archive material by Society Members and the General Public on Friday each week from 10.00am until 2.00pm, and the some Saturdays of the month. When the Centre is open, there are volunteers on-site with an interest in Wigston History and Family History. They will be happy to show you round the Centre and assist you.

WE NOW INCLUDE COUNTESTHORPE DATA IN THE HERITAGE CENTRE
The Committee have received news that under a government inspection in the light of the RAAC
concrete enquiry the whole of the Wigston Academy campus has been inspected and the following
decision has been made:

The building attached to the Heritage Centre will be demolished, along with the Heritage Centre. The building will then be rebuilt in accordance with the original footprint, which will not include the added-on Heritage Centre building. We do not have any firm time scale for this demolition, it could be a few weeks or could be the end of the year. In the new build there will unfortunately not be space available for the Heritage Centre.

The Academy two weeks ago applied for planning permission for the demolition and rebuild.
Therefore, we all have the task of finding new premises to be able to plan and ensure that our archives and services will be available to use by the wider  Wigston community.

Do you know of any premises suitable for the Centre, or do you have, or know of, any empty storage space, i.e. an empty garage or outbuildings, which we could use to store our equipment, stock and archives until we reopen. We may also be looking for transport help to move our assets to storage.

In the meantime we will be continuing with the day-to-day work and putting more material on to the web site.
