WIGSTON WITH TWO STEEPLES

A WALK THROUGH WIGSTON MAGNA ALONG LEICESTER ROAD, BELL STREET, THE BANK, BULL HEAD STREET, MOAT STREET AND LONG STREET

This DVD tells the story of Wigston Magna, the village with Two Steeples. Our story starts on the north side of Wigston Magna where Welford Road becomes Leicester Road Wigston. Our journey takes us along Leicester Road, Bell Street, Bull Head Street, Moat Street and finally along Long Street. On our journey we look at properties, businesses and people who lived and worked in our village. The DVD is made up of over 150 views and maps carefully selected from the Historical Society Archive and supported by a commentary telling the history of the buildings, businesses and the people who lived in them.

BRIDGE TO BRIDGE

A JOURNEY THROUGH KILBY BRIDGE AND WIGSTON MAGNA TO THE "SPION KOP" BRIDGE ON STATION ROAD

In the second of our series of DVD's about Wigston Magna, we start south of the village at the road bridge over the River Sence and finish the the railway bridge (Spion Kop) over the Midland Railway at the western end of Station Road. Our journey takes us through Kilby Bridge, Welford Road, Cooks Lane, the Cemetery, Horsewell Lane, Gas Lane, Newgate End and Bushloe End.

Finally to Station Road looking at how Wigston was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We look at buildings, local scenes, businesses and people seeing how they have changed over the years.

The DVD consists of 5 sections: -

The Vanishing Village – A Granada TV programme all about Wigston Magna with footage taken in the late 1950’s. It tells the story of the village and how it looked in the late 50’s with lots of local footage.

The Wigston Folk Museum: - Cine footage taken by Tony Lawrance of the museum started by Duncan Lucas at White Gate Farm. Showing the exhibits and a TV clip shown on the local news.

1939 Wigston Magna Carnival and crowning of the Village Queen: - Colour and Black & White footage of the event showing the parade floats, people and the streets on the route of the carnival

1939 South Wigston and Glen Parva Carnival and crowning of the Village Queen: - Black and White footage of the event showing the parade floats, people and the streets on the route of the carnival

Wigston South Railway Sidings: - taken circa 1958 a short cine footage of the activities and people in the sidings.
